Silicone Toy Care Guide
Premium platinum silicone is built to last. Treat it right and it will.
Cleaning
Platinum-cured silicone is non-porous — it does not harbor bacteria the way porous materials do. That said, proper cleaning before and after every use is non-negotiable.
Daily Cleaning (Recommended)
Wash with warm water and a mild, fragrance-free antibacterial soap. Work up a lather and rinse thoroughly under warm running water. Pat dry with a clean lint-free cloth or air dry completely before storage. This is sufficient for regular care.
Deep Cleaning / Sterilization
Platinum silicone (without internal structures like suction cups or vibrators) can be boiled. Submerge in boiling water for 3–5 minutes. You can also run through a dishwasher on the top rack without soap, or use a 10% bleach solution diluted in water — rinse very thoroughly afterward. This level of cleaning is not needed for everyday use but is a good practice periodically or when sharing.
Toy-Safe Cleaners
Purpose-made toy cleaning sprays and foams work well for quick cleaning between uses. Spray, let it sit for 30 seconds, wipe with a clean cloth or rinse. Look for products that are fragrance-free and specifically rated for silicone toys.
Storage
Proper storage protects the silicone surface and maintains the material quality over time.
Use a clean cotton or microfiber pouch. The original packaging works well, or any soft fabric pouch. Avoid storing bare on a shelf where the surface can pick up dust and lint.
Avoid silicone-on-silicone contact. Platinum silicone can bond with other silicone surfaces if left in prolonged direct contact. Store your BLACK BVT pieces separately, or use fabric as a barrier.
Cool, dark, dry. A drawer or closed container away from direct sunlight is ideal. Extended UV exposure can degrade silicone over time and affect colorways. Room temperature is fine.
Fully dry before storing. Storing a piece while damp can encourage mold growth in the storage pouch. Always air dry or pat dry completely before putting it away.
Dos & Don'ts
Do
- Use water-based lubricants
- Clean before and after every use
- Dry completely before storing
- Store in a fabric pouch or bag
- Boil to sterilize (no internal parts)
- Keep away from extended direct sunlight
- Inspect occasionally for any surface damage
- Enjoy. That's what it's there for.
Don't
- Use silicone-based lubricants
- Use petroleum-based products (Vaseline, baby oil)
- Store silicone touching silicone long-term
- Use harsh chemical cleaners (acetone, bleach undiluted)
- Expose to extreme heat (microwave, oven)
- Use with oil-based lubricants if using with condoms
- Store while damp or dirty
- Ignore surface damage — stop use if the material tears
Compatible Lubricants
The material choice matters here. Get it wrong and you'll damage the surface over time.
Water-Based Lubricants
The safest choice for all platinum silicone toys. Compatible with all materials, easy to clean, and widely available. Look for glycerin-free formulas if you have sensitivities. Brands like Sliquid H2O, Wicked Aqua, or Überlube Water are solid choices.
Silicone-Based Lubricants
Silicone lubricant reacts with silicone toys over time — it can degrade the surface, leaving it tacky or rough. Some high-quality platinum silicones resist this better than others, but the safest approach is to avoid silicone-on-silicone entirely.
Oil-Based Lubricants
Coconut oil, baby oil, and similar oil-based products are not recommended. They break down latex condoms and can be difficult to clean completely from silicone surfaces, potentially leading to bacterial growth over time.
Aloe-Based Lubricants
Natural aloe vera gel (pure, without additives) is a reasonable option for those who prefer a more natural product. Ensure it contains no silicone additives and is free from fragrances, preservatives, and other potential irritants.
